Navigating Perimenopause Naturally in Phoenix, AZ

Perimenopause is a phase in a woman’s life, that can begin as early as 35 years old and last until menopause in early to mid to late 50’s for most woman. As a naturopathic physician, I see this as a transition time, while it might come with a lot of side effects, with the right support can be a transformative time.

Understanding Perimenopause:

Perimenopause is the period when your body gradually shifts from regular cycles to no cycles. This can be marked by fluctuation hormone levels, especially estrogen and progesterone and a myriad of symptoms. These symptoms could be but are not limited to:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot Flashes/night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or depression
  • Weight gain/ metabolic changes
  • Brain Fog/ memory loss
  • Changes in libido and vaginal dryness

For many women, these symptoms can be overwhelming, but know you are not alone!

The Naturopathic Approach: Treating the Whole Women

As naturopathic physicians we treat the whole person. We take the time to understand your unique experience and symptoms with perimenopause/menopause but diving into medical, hormone, and lifestyle factors.

Key Elements for Perimenopause

  • Nutrition: A diet rich in whole foods, especially phytoestrogens like (flaxseeds) and vegetables can help balance hormones and support metabolism.
  • Botanical medicine: Herbal remedies can help with symptom management.  For example:
    • Chaste Tree (Vitex): helps boost progesterone, helping with PMS-like symptoms
    • Black cohosh: helps improve hot flashes and night sweets
    • DIM: helps balance estrogen levels
    • Gymnema: helps curb sugar cravings and support metabolic health.
  • Lifestyle changes: Stress management is important for hormone balancing.  Activities like yoga, stretching, meditation and regular movement (lifting weights) can help support both mental health and hormone health.
  • Supplements: Vitamin D is beneficial for bone health and mood support, magnesium can improve sleep and muscle relaxation, and Fish oil can help with mood and inflammation.
  • BHRT (bio-identical hormone replacement therapy): After review of medical history and on a case by case basis hormone replacement therapy could be beneficial to add to you perimenopause/menopause regimen.
  • Emotional Well-Being

Hormone fluctuations can impact mood, memory and concentration. Many women may experience anxiety or depression for the first time during perimenopause.  Adressing hormone imbalances can lead to significant improvements in mental health, especially for women.
